“Gye Nyame” CD
Musically this is unrelenting ferocious punk rock (the neurosis “Pain of Mind” album comes to mind) and on that level is some of the best music I’ve heard in a long time, production values are great and the songs are all very heartfelt and genuine...but I’d imagine that the vast majority of people reading this who normally would like this kind of thing would probably hate this because Chasm’s lyrics are extremely and overtly Christian. Its a definite case of God in your face - The Title “Gye Nyame” means Except God be involved it will not Happen” and out of ten songs seven are like sermons with lyrics like :All things work together for God’s glory, even the absence of his Light,” and “ but my God is never wrong,” and “We deserve Hell.” There one song which puts an argument against abortion which is a reasonable argument nonetheless and one which criticizes the “MTV generation” My first reaction to this was to dismiss it as religious bullsh*t but then I realized that was only being narrow minded. Should bands with lyrics like this be ignored? Do we compare Christianity to Facisim or accept it as an individual choice? Not everyone who calls themselves a christian is a narrow minded bible basher like every other aspect of life things vary. Personally this band doesn’t come across as the most open minded bunch, and I’d be wary of the marriage of Christ with Punk but then again a lot of people would view punk as a kind of fanatical devotion to unrealistic ideologies anyway (and there re parallels) - as always the best thing is to make up your own mind. Challenging stuff!! - “Gearhead Nation-#35”

Oh No! Another Christian punk band. Could it be that Boot to Head is a Christian label? I don’t know, and if you would have read the ads that I didn’t run, you wouldn’t have been able to tell either. Its never mentioned in the ads. That’s the same crap that Tooth and Nail records pulls. Understanding this, Songs about God and the evils of Abortion are concomitant. Of Course, there are the obligatory songs about he evil corporations exploiting rebellious youth (Boot to Head?). All of these songs are performed in a fast, punk rock, angry style. Its sort of like the Exploited meet Hell No. Too bad that it’s fu*ked up with God. I will keep this in my collection, and I will listen to it. I can’t recommend buying it though, since I am against deceitful means of collecting “Converts” -Doug “Married Punks-#11”

Q: What’s more ridiculous than Krishnacore? A: Christian crusty punk. This is surprisingly well played aggressive hardcore. But what's with the Spiky Mohawk guy screaming lyrics about Jesus and Pro life anthems? This is the Squatters equivalent of Stryper. I remember a time when punk rock was about rebellion, not religion. These kids need a good bare bottomed spanking from their local pastor. - “Jersey Beat-#59
